Hookah charcoal Natural charcoal is usually made from coconut shells. Self-igniting charcoal is different, as it consists of black powder and small amounts of magnesium. Only in a few traditional countries is charcoal still used for smoking. Both types of charcoal serve to heat the tobacco and thus release its aroma. As natural charcoal does not contain black powder, it cannot be lit like self-igniting charcoal with a simple lighter. Special charcoal lighters are required for this.
